Judy Ryan was born in Chicago, Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and a Masters of Fine Arts from Boston University. Ms Ryan also received atelier training in portrait, figure and cast drawing with artist/mentor/teacher, Robert Cormier at Fenway Studios in Boston and at the Guild of Boston Artists.
Ms Ryan has taught painting and drawing at many schools and museums in Massachusetts, including the De Cordova Museum in Lincoln, the Worcester Art Museum, Brookline Arts Center, Newton Center for the Art, Cambridge Center for Adult Education, Emerson Umbrella for the Arts and Concord Continuing Education. Ms Ryan has continued to teach at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston since 1994. She taught plein air painting workshops abroad for Art in Provence and later founded her own workshop business, Provence for Painters.
Ms Ryan has experience as an art conservator of paintings at Perter Williams Museum Services in Boston. Previously, she restored three-dimensional objects for Trefler and Son in Newton, MA. Ms Ryan has painted murals, most notably for Legal Seafood in Copley Place, Boston.
Ms Ryan received the Frances A. Kinnicutt Foreign Travel Award administered through the Worcester Art Museum. While working as an artist is Somerville, she received an artist support grant adminstered through the Somerville Arts Council. Ms Ryan maintained a studio at Vernon Street Studios in Somerville for ten years, where she organized several Open Studio events, as well as, other artists’ events, classes, workshops and drawing and painting groups in her studio.
In 1996, Ms Ryan became a member of the historic artists’ cooperative Fenway Studios in Boston where she lived, worked and taught classes until 2014. She has served on the Board of the Fenway Alliance representing Fenway Studios and continues to serve on the Fenway Studios Board of Directors. Also, go to: Friends of Fenway.org
Ms Ryan lives in Gloucester where she is painting plein air. She is an active member of the North Shore Art Association. Ms Ryan will be relocating back to Fenway Studios in the Fall of 2016 and will be teaching classes in her studio, along with organizing artists’ drawing groups.
